Yes, Virginia, Germans get the blues, too. Here´s proof : Future Blues, by harmonica player Marc Breitfelder and guitarist Lars Vegas. Nothing "future" about this selection of tunes, mind you, since they pick nuggets from Robert Johnson "(The´re Red Hot," "Me and the Devil Blues") and Son House ("My Black Mama", "Dry Spell Blues") to make theis spare but thoroughly polished arrangements. Breitfelder is quite a player, actually, swooning and crooning and wrapping his lines in and out of Vegas´finger-picked dobro guitar lines. The vibe is generally intimate and club-y, and there´s little doubt that these two players speak the same musical language. Vegas handles the vocal duties ably. Despite the obvious language/dialectical challenges (you know what hes means when he says "You can shake it/You can break it/ You can hang it on the wall", but somehow it sounds.... different).Still, this is a nice CD, excellent guitaring and harping and proof, if anyone needs it, that Robert and Son travel well * * * (Good luck tracking this one down, but try Marc Breitfelder, Tauernweg 70, 24147 Kiel, Germany, wwwphasezwo.com/blues/marc.htm or MarcBreitfelder@t-online.de

Nachdem Lars Vegas & The Love Gloves den "Dresden Blues Award - The Next Generation " im April 2001 überreicht bekamen, drängte sich angesichts der eigenen Stilbeschreibung ("Deltabilly") irgendwie der Eindruck auf, hierbei würde es sich um einen weiteren Versuch handeln, die Musik der alten Heroen aus dem Mississipi-Delta mit modernen Elementen zu revolutionieren. Weit gefehlt, Lars Vegas hat den frühen Country- und Delta-Blues förmlich in sich aufgesogen und Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House und viele andere offensichtlich zum seinen persönlichen Favoriten erklärt. Bei "Future Blues" handelt es sich um eine kurzweilige - aber leider auch kurze - Zeitreise zurück in die 20er bis 40er Jahre. Zusammen mit Marc Breitfelder interpretiert Vegas (dobro, guit,voc.) Nummern von Skip James, Son House, Willie Brown, Henry Thomas und Robert Johnson. Dies authentisch, kompetent und spannend. Da fällt die einfachste Aufmachnung der Verpackung nicht mehr sonderlich ins Gewicht. In Trio-Besetzung ist Lars Vegas übrigens mit seinen "Love Gloves" Murat Chicago (b) und Klaas Kentucky (dr,voc) überwiegend im Berliner Raum live zu erleben. (df)
